HOW TO GET THERE
To enter the Park you must get to Puerto Anguay, on the Chepu River. There you must board one of the boats that make the trip to the “Pier of the light” and get off at “Chepu Bajo”. The trail is 8 km long, so between two and two and a half hours of walking.
You can download KMZ of the entrance trail to load into the corresponding app here. We recommend GAIA and Wikiloc.
The path is marked at certain points by orange triangles (reused from buoys that are beached off of the coast of AHUENCO).

ACTIVITIES
Please inform the Park Ranger when you go on a hike or to Lar, so that they can check on your safe return.
HIKING
Before setting off, make sure that the weather conditions are suitable for the walk. On rainy and cloudy days, the likelihood of losing your bearings increases.
The list of essential equipment that you should take with you on your hiking or trekking activities includes:
- Map or route plan (You can take a photo of the map located at the trailhead or ask the Park Ranger for information).
- Global Positioning System (GPS) or analogue compass. Today there are several apps that perform these functions well, such as Wikiloc and GAIA.
- A first aid kit.
- Footwear suitable for walking, i.e. one with ankle support and good tread. Avoid sandals, light trainers or shoes with smooth soles.
- Clothing appropriate for the place you will go to and to the weather conditions;
- Protect yourself from the sun’s rays with UV-protective sunglasses, a suitable hat, and sunscreen;
- Sufficient amounts of water.
- The greater the difficulty of the activity, the greater the associated risk. However, you should be aware that serious accidents can occur on busy and seemingly easy trails, where a slip can lead to an accident.
- Ask the park rangers about the areas you could visit.
- Carefully read the information signs you encounter during your tours and visits.
- Do not leave the trails or take shortcuts. Avoid creating alternative paths, which cause erosion problems and confuse fellow hikers.
- If you are interested in photography or filming, pay attention to the terrain when looking for the perfect image in order to avoid an accident.
- Consider the trek’s duration and always walk in natural light. If in doubt, consult the park rangers or trainees.
- Take rest breaks.
- Beware of insect and animal bites.
- Do not eat any wild fruits or plants unless you know the flora and their potential toxicity
- Notify the park ranger of the trails you will visit and stay informed of trail conditions.
PENGUIN COLONY
The visit to the penguin colony costs $3.500 per person and must be coordinated and guided by the Park Ranger or by a student trainee of the park. The penguins arrive to nest at Ahuenco in September and leave at the end of February. The entrance to the penguin colony lookout site is only accessible at low tide. Check the tide timetable to plan your visit.
It is strictly forbidden to enter the beach and nesting area of the penguin colony. You can only observe them from the lookout.
BIRDWATCHING AND PHOTOGRAPHY
Ahuenco, its flora, fauna, and landscapes, offers many opportunities for birdwatching and photography.
RULES OF PARK USE
- It is forbidden to light fires.
- You must take out with you all of your non-compostable rubbish. “Your rubbish, your responsibility”.
- You should cook your food on a stove or cooker.
- Do not damage the ecosystem.
- It is important to follow the rangers’ instructions at all times.
- Water storage containers are filled once a day with 6,000 liters water; they supply the campsite, the Leaf, the cabins, and the Park Ranger’s house. Please make every effort to conserve water. Do not leave taps running.
- Do not feed native wildlife. It can break their life cycle and can make them sick.
- Avoid making noise. It disturbs local wildlife and other visitors.
- Pets are not allowed. The Park ranger or the trainee will ask you to leave the Park immediately if you enter with a pet. This is because dogs and cats can hurt local fauna and carry diseases. Dogs and cats belong in our homes and cities.
